Friday night August 30th Last Chance for Animals vigil for the eighty puppy mill dogs shot by their owners after the dog warden told them to vaccinate for flies and fleas. Elmer Zimmerman shot 70 dogs at his E&A Kennel in Maxatawny Township after a July 24 inspection by state officials, the state Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement said. His brother, Ammon Zimmerman, shot 10 dogs at his neighboring business, A&J Kennel. Wardens had ordered 39 dogs checked for flea and fly bites. They also issued citations for extreme heat, insufficient bedding and floors that dogs' feet could fall through. "These were dogs with no names. These were dogs that none of us ever knew," said Jenny Stephens of North Penn Puppy Mill Watch. "These were dogs who never knew the kindness a human hand can offer and these were dogs who died a violent and terror-filled death with no one to comfort them." "The decision by commercial breeders to kill healthy dogs instead of paying to repair a kennel and seek veterinary care is alarming and will likely outrage many people," state Secretary of Agriculture Dennis Wolff said in a statement released earlier this week. Hundreds of thousands of puppies are breed at Puppy Mills, and then sold to Pet Stores. These dogs only job is to breed and have puppies, so the owner can make as much of a profit as possible. If the dogs can no longer breed, then they are very often killed with a metal object beaten against their head. No health care, never enough food, and no medical care, these dogs live in a wire crate their whole life with no socialization, and never able to enjoy the grass and walking. This is no way to live. In July Hearts United for Animals and Almost Home Canine Rescue teamed up to save over 100 dogs from puppy mills in Nebraska. The condition of the dogs was appalling. ASPCA Puppy Mill Investigation
ASPCA Puppy Mill Investigation in Marshall County, Mississippi. Members of the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team led the effort to rescue a total of 96 animals, 34 of the dogs are recovering in the ASPCA Adoption Center.

It's Puppy Week!
It's the start of Pug week. My son Ned and his wife Marta have two pugs, Yogi and booboo. The dogs are pretty old now, and Yogi is literally on his last legs, but in going through old videos this weekend, I found lots of footage of the two little guys as puppies -- choosing them from among all the other available puppies, bringing them home, and the first weeks in Ned & Marta's house. The videos were so darn cute that I decided to devote a week to Yogi and booboo. This first video is making the puppy selection.
