Samoyed
The Samoyed is a good-natured, smiling dog with an uncanny understanding of human emotions. One of the purest of dogs, the Samoyed is a beautiful pure white teddy bear.
History
The Breed Standard is loosely based on that of a slightly enlarged Dalmatian and was first registered by the South African Kennel Club, SAKU (now KUSA) in 1924. At that time KUSA was the only Kennel Club in the territory. Ridgebacks were first brought to the United States by Col. Morris DePass and his wife Maj. Ruth DePass who raised the breed in Kiln, Mississippi. The breed was admitted into the American Kennel Club in 1955 as a member of the Hound Group. The first ridgebacks in Britain were shown by Mrs Edward Foljambe in 1928.
Appearance and Size
The Samoyed has a strong, wedge-shaped head with deep, dark eyes. The Samoyed is known for having curling lips, giving the impression of a perpetually smiling face. Their nose is black or brown and they have medium, pointed, erect ears with a tail curved over the back. The coat is thick with a soft undercoat that protects them from cold weather in their native Siberia. The color of the coat comes in pure white (which is preferred), biscuit, cream or can be mixed with white. The Samoyed stands 19 to 24 inches from the shoulder and weighs between 50 to 65 pounds.
Personality
Samoyeds' friendly disposition makes them poor guard dogs; an aggressive Samoyed is rare. With their tendency to bark however, they can be diligent watch dogs, barking whenever something approaches their territory. Samoyeds are excellent companions, especially for small children or even other dogs, and they remain playful into old age. When Samoyeds become bored they may begin to dig. With their sled dog heritage, a Samoyed is not averse to pulling things, and an untrained Samoyed has no problem pulling its owner on a leash rather than walking alongside. Samoyeds were also used to herd reindeer. They will instinctively act as herd dogs, and when playing with children, especially, will often attempt to turn and move them in a different direction. The breed is characterized by an alert and happy expression which has earned the nicknames "Sammy smile" and "smily dog."
