Sunday October 18 was the fifth annual Times Square Dog Day in New York City.

Dogs get dressed up in their Halloween finery to raise awareness for Animal Haven’s Adopt a Pet program. Representatives from the organization were there along with pets in need of new homes.

The message is very clear. With so many dogs in need of homes, we know that we need to adopt and not shop. Although this principle is ideal, we should also be aware of dogs who are harder to place than others. I am writing this post in hopes that this awareness will help us open our hearts to these dogs.

We are very touched by Drew’s decision to adopt Vivian and hope more people are inspired to adopt their new best friend.

Shepard Fairy is the artist who turned Obama’s face into an icon. And now he is working with Adopt a Pet to do the same for shelter dogs.

D.O.G. has been mentioned in a few of our other posts, like our interview with Artist Knox and our post about the dogs from the Riverside Puppy Mill.

They specialize in hip and stylish dog products. This includes couture for everyday wear, formal wear and even PJ’s. Additionally they also carry unique items with intelligent concepts that are very useful for practical everyday life.

We absolutely love discovering people and dogs who are making one of a kind contributions to the canine world.

One of our very own members, Carla Fish, is an amazing artist who makes hand crafted sock pets. When you buy a sock pet, part of the proceeds are donated to the Irvine Animal Care Center. Or you can choose a no kill animal charity of your choice.

At first glance, you would never have imagined the type of trauma they endured. It is one thing to understand that they came from a puppy mill. But its a whole other experience to see what this environment was like. Here is a video which tells more about their story.
