Dos
1) Do comparison shop between different pet insurance providers to find the best coverage for you and your dog.

2) Do select a pet insurance policy which allows you to take your dog to your absolute first-choice of veterinarian(s).

3) Do online searches for pet insurance companies you’re considering, along with words like “scam” and “complaint.”

4) Do read all the small print in the contract of a pet insurance policy before you decide on purchasing it.  If the small print is too complicated, take that as a warning sign.

Don’ts
1) Don’t select a policy that only pays up to a fixed dollar limit (as opposed to one that pays a fixed percentage of a vet’s total fee).

2) Don’t rush into any pet insurance policy that doesn’t extend coverage over your dog’s entire lifetime, i.e., don’t buy a policy that expires in two years and won’t get renewed if your dog has developed a chronic health condition.

3) Don’t forget to scrutinize pet insurance policies for weasel clauses that leave you holding the bag if your dog gets sick or suffers an accident.

4) Don’t forget to check on whether your employer offers pet insurance as an additional benefit.
