1) PRO: A veterinarian taking a holistic approach will spend more time than a traditional vet evaluating your dog’s life circumstances and how, altogether, they impact his/her health.
CON: Typically, a long visit to a holistic veterinarian will cost more than one to a traditional vet. The per minute cost for the longer visit to the holistic vet, however, is likely to be less.
2) PRO: A holistic vet might incorporate into his/her care of your dog more treatment modalities than would a traditional vet.
CON: Some holistic modalities get employed when a traditional medical approach has failed; they could cause you false hope.
3) PRO: Holistic veterinarians are likely to spend a lot of time with you working out diet and exercise programs to keep your dog in optimal health. A holistic vet is likely to be interested in working with you on all aspects of preventative health care for your dog.
CON: There is no single definition for holistic veterinary care. Particular caution should be exercised as regards homeopathic remedies, because the science behind homeopathy is not as strong as that behind traditional medicine.
In Sum: If you are interested in holistic care for your dog, only use a veterinarian who employs a holistic approach as an enhancement of scientific medical methods. Acupuncture, chiropractic attentions, massage, et cetera are most likely to help your dog if used in addition to, not instead of traditional scientific veterinary medicine.
