Small Ways You Can Help Dogs
by Christine Yee on September 4, 2009
In writing these blogs here on Dogasaur, I come across so many stories of dogs who need help. Having these constant reminders has made me want to find small ways to help.
Most people have the intention of wanting to help. On a collective scale, if all these intentions turned into actions, it would make a huge difference for a lot of animals.
Near the office where I work, there is a dog who stays with a homeless lady living in an abandoned van. I see him almost everyday when I park my car. Last Friday after work, I decided to go to the supermarket and buy food for the both of them. I bought a bag of dog food for about $8, four bottles of water ($1 each), and a loaf of bread ($1).
The dog is obviously quite happy when I drop food off. I’ve been glad to see that other people have been pretty kind in leaving food just as I do.
Here is a video I found of this nice lady feeding another homeless dog.
I was talking to a few members here on Dogasaur and discovered some other ways people carve out a little bit of time and/or resources to help dogs.
One of our members, donates money on a monthly basis to help a UK charity called the Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). This organization provides free veterinary care to people on low income or welfare benefits.
Another member is currently fostering puppies.
A while ago, we did an interview with Samantha from Barkzilla. I am reposting this quote, because its something we should always keep in mind.
It can be easy to forget that not all dogs have been lucky enough to find a loving home yet. Helping dogs in need can be as simple (and free) as visiting The Animal Rescue site each day to donate food to shelter dogs. Getting involved with local pet communities or clubs is also a great way to learn about ways you can help less-fortunate animals in your own neighborhood (and meet other animal lovers!). Once you start looking, you’ll be surprised at how many ways there are to help!
Here are some other ways to help dogs who need help
- Transport a rescue dog to their new family or a vet’s office
- Volunteer your time at a shelter
- Donate blankets and towels. This way animals won’t have to sleep on bars or a cement floor.
- Host a party to help homeless pets. Have guests bring items that could be donated. (e.g. food, crates etc.) Read more
- participate in these free ways to help
Direct forms of help are always a good thing. You might one day find a dog like the one in this video.
Instead of just driving or walking by, (unfortunately like the person who created this video) create some time to get food or maybe even take him/her to a local shelter.
Even in these economically challenging times, let’s not forget animals. Their livlihood depends on us.
